There will come a time in the life of any computer user when he will need to burn data onto a CD or DVD – and that is where the Alcohol 120% application comes in. This CD and DVD burning software makes the task easy for anyone, even the novice user. And to please the advanced users, the application comes with a few handy extras: it creates a virtual drive onto which you can mount an ISO image, it lets you create images, and it can copy CDs and DVDs.

The standard steps for getting started with an application are to download an installation file, run it, and click through a simple setup wizard. Alcohol 120%’s setup wizard lets you pick between a Quick and an Advanced Installation. Please note that the recommended Quick Installation will set your homepage and default search to Babylon.com and it will install the Babylon Toolbar. Go with the Advanced Installation if you don’t like toolbars and want to keep your homepage and search. The setup wizard will also try to get you to install Dealply, a coupon browser app. Opt out if you’re not interested. When the installation process completes, your default web browser will launch and you will be taken to a “Thank you for installing Alcohol 120%” webpage.”

On Alcohol 120%’s interface, in the left hand side, there are three tabs: Main, Options and Help. In the pane to the right, the images you’ve recently accessed are displayed (it is blank since it’s your first time using the application). You can add new images to the list, you can remove them, you can even create folders to keep things organized. In the pane at the bottom, your physical CD or DVD drives, as well as your virtual CD and DVD drives, are displayed.

Taking advantage of the functionality of Alcohol 120% is a very simple process – it’s made simple by the fact that there are wizards for everything. In the Main tab I mentioned above, there are the following buttons: Image Making Wizard (create an image from a specified CD or DVD device), Image Burning Wizard (select an image file and burn it), Copy Wizard (copy a CD or DVD for backup purposes), Image Finder (search for images), DVD/CD Manager (view info about your physical and virtual CD and DVD drives), Erase Wizard (erase data on a CD or DVD), and Xtra Wizard (create image files from your own files). There’s an Audio Converter button as well in the Main tab – when you click it, you will be taken to a webpage on the developer’s site.

With the help of the wizards mentioned above, you can easily burn data onto a CD or DVD, copy a CD or DVD, create an image file, or mount an existing image file on a virtual drive. With the trial version of Alcohol 120% you can have up to 6 virtual drives onto which you can mount image files. You can have up to 31 drives with a licensed version. There are other trial version limitations you should know about: you’re limited to burning with 2 drives at the same time and you can use the trial only for 15 days.
